  1. 1774-1809. US explorer. He was commissioned
  2. by president Thomas Jefferson to find a land
  3. route to the Pacific with William Clark
  4. (1770-1838). They followed the Missouri River
  5. to its source, crossed the Rocky Mountains
  6. (aided by an Indian girl, Sacajawea) and
  7. followed the Columbia River to the Pacific,
  8. then returned overland to St Louis 1804-06.
  9. Formerly private secretary to President
  10. Jefferson, he was rewarded for his expedition
  11. with the governorship of the Louisiana
  12. Territory. His death, near Nashville,
  13. Tennessee, has been ascribed to suicide, but
  14. was more probably murder. The detailed
  15. journals kept of the expedition added to an
  16. understanding of the region and facilitated
  17. westward expansion.
